the brief story of 4042

remember landlines?

4042 were the last four digits for the landline phone number in the home where I grew up. Later, when cellphones became a thing, it was the last four digits in any cell number the family cellphones had. Always 4042 in the end, so we only had to memorise the first four digits. Easy peasy.

In a way those four digits became a brand for the Olsen household. Well, for me it did.

The landline is long gone, and the 4042-rule with it. Modern times have made the art of remembering phone numbers by heart obsolete, so I've made it the name of my little one man design ensemble to honor a nostalgic time of my life.

meet the mullet

who wears slim fit jeans..?

My name is Simon, that's what most people call me. I wear skinny black jeans, old converse chuck taylor high tops, and I rock a mullet. And a moustache. Some mights say I'm out of touch with the trends, and they're probably right. I'd say I'm nurturing my personal brand, maintaining my integrity. But that might just be me…

Anyway. Shout out to landlines, flow TV, and jazzing things up real nice!

I don't listen to the radio, and I tend to steer clear of repetition. Whenever I get the chance I prefer walking the least trodden path. At times until I discover interesting things, other times until I find out why others don't go down that very path.

I guess I'm the kind of dude who has to touch the paint to make sure it's actually wet.

Anyway. Shout out to landlines, flow TV, and jazzing things up real nice!

what does he do?

working in the creative industry is fun, but an ever changing challenge. the days of specialists seem gone, and so I try my best to be a human version of a swiss army knife – I learn new, interesting, and fun stuff all the time which is great.

so.

for you, and your business, I'll just say I can do whatever you need done so long as it has to do with communication and visual design.

and if there's something I don't know how to do, I'm lucky enough to know a whole bunch of talented folk who can get the stuff done that I can't.

more specifically, I do…

creative direction
visual design
storytelling
into-the-wall-staring
metaphorical ping pong-ing
photo & video work
workshopping & sparring
coffee brewing + drinking
editorial design
dumb question asking
conceptual juggling
printing
drumming + backing vocals
